Averrhoa bilimbi – also called Cucumber Tree, Kamias, etc., and known locally as the “Pickle Tree”: Related to the Averrhoa carambola (Star Apple or Star Fruit), the Averrhoa bilimbi is an attractive evergreen tree with short trunk divided into several upright branches growing up to 20′ – 25′ ft. More sensitive to cold weather or frost than the carambola, it tolerates frost up to 32 degrees F for short periods. Tree needs full sun or light shade, grows vigorously and does well in most soils; no major attention needed to grow this fruit tree except for frost.

The Averrhoa bilimbi is common in many Asiatic countries, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and in Central – South America. This fruit tree is another great addition to any home garden or yard, and a good addition to any grower of a variety of fruit trees.

Fruit is sour/acidic, and is pickled locally by either sweetening the fruit, added to soup or just sliced with soy sauce added. Fruit ripens when yellowish-green and falls to the ground, and range in size from 2″ – 4″ inches.
