Spindle Palm, A well-known and much-loved tropical palm with a spindle-shaped, swollen trunk and stiffly ascending, pinnate leaves. Hyophorbe verschaffeltii is a palm with an erect solitary stem, greyish, smooth and slightly swollen in the central part, up to about 8 m in height and 25-40 cm in diameter.
One of the most ornamental palms, both in its juvenile and adult state, which has contributed to its spread and to prevent it from disappearing completely, being in nature reduced to a few dozen individuals in unprotected areas subject to intensive grazing which prevents it natural reproduction, for this reason has been included in the red list of the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) as "Critically Endangered" (at very high risk of extinction in nature in the immediate future).
